    Description

Chinese export mug in Fitzhugh pattern decorated in green overglaze enamel, c. 1820.
Condition: Loss of gilding on the handles and rim, the base has a spider hairline; otherwise in excellent condition consistent with age and usage. Please examine the photos; they are part of the description.
Dimensions: Approximately 5¼” high x approximately 4⅛” diameter.
    Decoration
    :
The body is decorated with a butterfly and diaper pattern border, often referred to as a “Fitzhugh Border”, above two sprays of chrysanthemum and peony on each side and a medallion on the front.
The intertwined handles appear to have once been gilded.
There is a narrow green band at the base.
    The bottom is unmarked.
Unlike the more typical blue Fitzhugh patterned pieces that are underglazed, the colored Fitzhugh patterned pieces, like this one, are overglazed in colors from the famille rose palette.
